About Me

Artist, architect, builder, musician, grease monkey.I've always drawn and built things and taken things apart. As a kid I drew stuff all the time. I would make clip art at our family-owned bakery to be used for cake decorating. I even drew a logo and sketched a layout for the yellow page ad; but let's say I started really producing images and learning about graphics as a screenprinter in a large T-shirt & tye-dye shop in Boulder, CO. In fact, the main reason I wanted a job there was to see how it was "really done". I worked every job there was to do and produced a few decent graphics while I was there. I built a darkroom in my basement for less than the cost of a photography class and started excercising my old '65 Nikon F, while only flooding the basement a couple of times (don't worry it was a rental). I must've been getting too comfortable, so I thought I would go back to school. This just about bankrupted me so, needing a plan to pay for and attend college, I went into an architectural drafting program and worked as a framing carpenter to learn about building (and pay my rent). After getting some nice paying gigs as a freelance computer drafting service, I finally got to finish my BFA in drawing. I was really into it, but decided to keep on with the school thing and got my Masters of Architecture. I've since become a licensed architect, but my real love is art (besides music and building stuff).

Artist's Statement

ARCHETYPES

Art is about implied possibilities. My drawings and paintings focus on the protrait and the nude human figure, not as an homage to Western "High Art" but as a window into humanity. Nudity represents vulnerability, honesty, openess. A stylized human figure, bold translucent color and expressive mark-making are juxtaposed with interesting or non-sequiter imagery consisting of common everyday objects. With these images I am exploring relationships, not only between objects, but human relationships; breaking down ideals and archetypes.Drawing is line, shape, value, color and to some extent texture, though that crosses into the illusory (texture being implied through mark-making and the surface of the substrate). Two-dimensionality is emphasized with the '"hand of the artist" to imply the image, leaving possibilities for the imagination of the viewer. Conceptually the theme of the image is social moire. What is "supposed to be" or what appears on the surface, does not equal what is geniuine, or what is the soft underbelly.The works on drywall are a deconstruction of the ideal of the household; they represent the tearing apart of the elements of a home which coincide with the idea of relationships and domestic illusions. Expectation versus reality...the illusion of what society says should be and a subconcious longing for the archetype, a seam develops where these begin to break down. The substitution of material objects for relationships is not only a syptom of our consumer culture but a representation comparing the sometimes stark reality of domesticity to the unrealistic nature of superficial post-war ideals. These explorations represent a personal expression of society, my childhood, adult relationships and my professional experience with architecture.Conceptually, humor and the unusual relationships in my work ask the viewer to look at things differently while injecting an optimistic, hopeful qualilty. Aesthetically, elements unrecognized, or faceless figures ask the viewer to look at the marks and colors; and to fill in these expressions their own impressions.
